Camp Counselors' Perspectives: Certifications at Camp

Get Rewarded For Doing What You Love

Ford and Harry are former campers and have been co-counselors in Cabin 1 for multiple summers together, but what keeps them coming back? Watch the video below, next in the series from the perspectives of our summer staff!

As Ford says, “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had making money.” For them, the value lies in things like helping kids grow, getting professional certifications worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and being part of something fulfilling during the summer.

Head of Sailing

Falling Creek is the most fun I’ve ever had making money. I’m in recreation management and I’ve been in jobs in recreation management where I just feel gassed at the end of the day and I’m not even doing nearly as hard of work as I’m doing here. Just all the rewards you get from teaching these kids, and helping them grow and doing what you love to do, like I love to sail and I get to do that every single day.

I got paid to play capture the flag this last week. You know, yeah it can be difficult at times, especially with the younger kids, it can be tiring. But while it sounds cheesy, it’s definitely very fulfilling.

So I’ve gotten multiple certifications through Falling Creek, meaning that they have paid for me to go do them. Some out-of-state even, I’ve gotten a wilderness first aid, I’ve got my lifeguard certification, I’ve got my sailing instructor certification - and these are thousands of dollars worth of certifications that I wouldn’t have been able to get myself if it wasn’t for Falling Creek, helping me get these things. I’m going to use them in the offseason as well, and in the summer.

You can apply here, or if you’re interested in tailoring your summer employment experience as an internship! Are you a former camper like Harry and Ford? Find out what it’s like to return on staff.
