Everyone at camp brings unique talents to the community, both visible and invisible. It can take courage to display your talents to the whole camp, but last night we had campers and counselors stepping up to share during the 2022 June Camp Talent Show!
The theme of the day had been Tie dye/Woodstock, so the Gym was all decked out with fun decorations! There were flowers, peace signs, streamers, and music from the late 60s and 70s playing between each act. Zach was a great emcee, introducing each performance with excitement and keeping the energy high!
The evening began with a solo piano performance by Harry Gregorie, the assistant Linehead for Sorrel, and counselor in Cabin 1. He wasn’t the only staff member to showcase their musical talents, as Andy Killebrew, Assistant Staff & Program Director, shared his trombone skills by playing “Viva la Vida.” Nemo, the Sorrel Linehead, also played “Riptide” on guitar, with the whole crowd singing along.
Aside from the counselors’ musical talents, camper Daniel D. shared his piano skills with us! He played the “Mission Impossible” theme song. We also got to see the comedic talents of several campers, starting with Tripp M. and Shaw R. who performed a skit they wrote themselves. Tripp also told several riddles to the crowd. Some of our oldest campers performed a skit as a cabin, where two of them began telling jokes so corny that the rest of the cabin ran in as the FBI and stole the joke book, which had been “wanted by the FBI because it was too cheesy.”
Another counselor performance was done by Sunny, the head of pottery. She wowed the crowd with her unicycle skills, by pedaling all around the gym - sometimes using only one foot! She finished by hopping down from the stage to the floor, and continuing pedaling the unicycle! The crowd went wild. However, one of the major highlights of the evening was the series of acts that the whole Theater Class wrote and performed together!
This summer, Kylie is leading the theater program, and the boys in the class had been writing and practicing their acts not only during activity periods, but during free choice times as well. Their hard work paid off, and the performances were clever and funny, especially since the campers played the roles of counselors! They did a great job on their rendition of “Opening Day,” with some campers comically playing the roles of moms, directors, and counselors. They even had their own counselors pretending to be campers, which had everyone laughing!
The talent show night was very interactive, with Zach including dance breaks so everyone had a chance to get up and on their feet throughout the evening. There’s nothing like a spontaneous dance party at camp!
Usually the Talent Show is just for live performances, but there was a new addition this year so campers could display their artistic talents as well. Along the side of the gym were tables set up to showcase the pottery, art projects, woodworking creations, and blacksmithing masterpieces that had been made throughout the session. Everyone could walk by and admire the artwork made by their fellow campers before and after the live show.
We’re proud of all our talented campers, whether they showcased their skills at the show or not! Today is our final day at camp, and everyone is back from trips off-property so we can all enjoy the day together on the mountain. After breakfast today, we’ll be enjoying our first three activity periods like usual, but after lunch we’ll have an extended rest period to pack up. Then it will be time for special sign-ups (just like on Sunday afternoons) to end the day on an exciting note, followed by a reflective gathering at Candlelight Campfire. Here’s to a fantastic final day of June Camp!
