A full tie-dye suit is the best attire for when the Talent Show falls on Tie-Dye Day!

Last night during our Evening Program, we got to celebrate the many impressive talents, comedic skills, and fun energy that our campers and counselors have! Everyone at camp brings unique talents to the community, both visible and invisible. It can take courage to perform in front of the whole camp, but last night we were lucky to have many people stepping up to share during the 2022 Main Camp Talent Show!

The theme of the day had been Tie dye/Woodstock, so the Gym was all decked out with fun decorations. There were flowers, peace signs, streamers, and music from the late 60s and 70s playing between each act. Zach Rivera was a great emcee, introducing each performance with excitement and keeping the energy high!

In previous summers, the Talent Show has just been for live performances, but there was a new addition this year so campers could display their artistic talents as well. Along the side of the gym were tables set up to showcase the pottery, art projects, woodworking creations, and blacksmithing masterpieces that had been made throughout the session. Everyone could walk by and admire the artwork made by their fellow campers before and after the live show.

TJ had an impressive portrait he drew in pencil. Hudson Y. had a colorful bowl he threw on the wheel in pottery, and painted in shades of orange, red, and yellow. He planned to use it for salsa, and had stencils of tomatoes and peppers in the center of the bowl. Brandon V. had sculpted not one, but two impressive dinosaurs out of clay and glazed them bright yellow! There were four tables of beautiful artwork like this, as well as dozens of paintings and drawings hanging for all to admire.

To kick the evening off, Ryan M. performed the “Bazooka Bubblegum” comedy song, which he has done every year at the camp talent show as his own tradition. The second act was by Coley Brown, Tsuga Assistant Linehead. He played “Lovefool” on guitar and sang beautifully, but when it came to the chorus he had 4 backup singers suddenly joining him onstage in comically high falsetto. Shifty, Harry, Ford, and Afton were the backup singers, who together with Coley were the “Sassy Little Cats”. When they finished, Zach said, “Let’s give it up for the Sassy Little Cats - I didn’t know our counselors could hit notes like that.”

Next, Nemo and Zachary N. performed plate-spinning tricks together. They were followed by Andrew on piano, playing a soothing melody. We had a group of Sorrel campers perform a “Fortnite Fusion Crew” skit that they wrote themselves, and Cabin 40 sang and danced to “God’s Plan” by Drake with the whole crowd. Nnamdi shared his great talents on the piano, and John G. sang a beautiful rendition of “Cherry Wine”.

In between acts, the Lineheads performed a “4 Act Melodrama” about Falling Creek, enlisting the help of Andy, Matt, Yates, Zach, and Jeff in their performance. The comedic drama included the “ghost of fried chicken Sundays past,” the framing of Linehead Carson, and the eventual reveal that camp dog Rucker had been the guilty party all along. It was both silly and dramatic, all great qualities of a camp play.

To keep the evening’s enthusiasm high, Zach and Matt included some interactive entertainment for everyone. Halfway through the performances, they announced that we would all play a version of Rock, Paper, Scissors - but with a chicken twist. First everyone had to squat down like an egg, and waddle around the gym to find another egg to play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner would turn into a chick, who would then do the same thing, finding another chick to play against. The winner of that Rock, Paper, Scissors round became a chicken, and next became “Larry Bird.” The winner of the game was the first one to win all the matches and transform past Larry Bird to Big Bird. It was an exciting and fast paced game, and a great way to mix things up after sitting for a while!

We’re proud of all our talented campers, whether they showcased their skills at the show or not! Today is already our final full day of activities at camp, and we’ll be packing in as much as we can. Here’s to another great day of Main Camp!
