Why Camp is Paradise for Boys

It’s almost time to pack the trunks and return to the mountains of North Carolina!

While we’ve previously written a whole blog about “why boys’ camp”, it’s always better to hear from campers and staff members themselves.

What’s so great about camp, from the boys’ perspectives?

Camp was really formative for me in the early years, because it was like a magical place where I could try out whatever I wanted to. I had an amazing support system with the staff who were there year after year - I learned so many new things, struggled, succeeded, and had a lot of experiences that I’m so grateful for.”

I look back and see most of my favorite memories come from being at camp. When I first discovered my love of blacksmithing, going on the blob, and overcoming my fear, trying new things that I love and am doing every day now. I love camp and it is my favorite place in the whole wide world.

Coming from Florida, I didn’t have a lot of opportunities to be up in the mountains. Something about the community here just really stood out to me as a camper, as well as just the incredible activities. I grew a lot from my time here growing up, and in my faith as well.

I knew nothing about kayaking before I came to Falling Creek. I started kayaking on my 3rd year and this year I began to progress into more advanced trips…I was a little scared at first, and then I remembered that all of the counselors have whitewater rescue training…I felt proud to look up at what I did, and I can’t wait to go home and tell everybody about it.

During my time as a camper, my counselors went to great lengths to make my camp experience what it was. They obviously cared about me deeply.

I thought a lot about the counselors I had as a camper - especially the paddling counselors that I still think about today. They made a big impact on my life, and I want to make a big impact on others’ lives. The most rewarding part [about being a counselor] is seeing kids in stages that I was at when I was a camper. Especially kayaking, it’s like seeing my memories from when I was a camper play out before me. I had so much fun when I was a camper, so I just know for a fact that they’re having fun and they’re happy.

Camp is for boys of all ages - including dads! What’s Father/Son Weekend like?

I liked the open-ended activity schedule. This allowed for my son to tell me exactly what he wanted to do in that moment rather thantelling me the day before while we were signing up for different activities a day in advance. I also liked how intentional the camp was in making sure that fathers and sons did as much as they could together, I thought this was a good blending of exposing the kids/dads to Falling Creek as a camp, but also making sure that this weekend was all about fathers and sons having fun together.
