which means that the final multi-day trips still out on their adventures will be returning today! Soon we’ll be getting ready for another weekend on the mountain together. Today on the blog, we’re highlighting some of the trips that were out this past week!
The backpackers spent three days hiking around Pisgah National Forest. On the first day, they summited Black Balsam, which is over 6000 feet tall. They camped in a wonderful campsite along Flat Laurel creek that night, enjoyed the sunset, card games, and conversation around the campfire.
The paddlers seeking some whitewater adventure headed to the Tuckasegee and the French Broad (section 9) rivers in North Carolina. The trip has three strong canoe partners who are on track to earn their “yaklets,” and two new kayakers who are learning to love the freedom that comes from a smaller boat.
Yaklets are bracelets that boys earn to signify that they have completed all their canoe progressions and can move on to a kayak. You can read more about the paddling progression and preps in this blog from 2022. The paddlers on this trip focused on edge control, craving into eddies and practiced loads of T-rescues.
For those paddlers seeking a more relaxed pace, there was also a multi-day flat water trip that went to Lake Tugalo in South Carolina. This group spent three days paddling and camping around the lake, swimming, cooking food over the fire, and exploring the waterfalls and streams across the wooded coast of the lake.
Rock Climbing will be returning from their multi-day trip later today, and we’re looking forward to sharing photos and stories soon! However, in addition to the trip they’re on now, they’ve also been taking day trips to Gilbert’s Rock nearly every day this session. Gilbert’s is camp’s private rock face located nearby in Flat Rock NC, with a gently sloped rock face and plenty of textured spots for good holds, making it an ideal teaching ground for beginning climbers. Last week, the climbers were in Pisgah National Forest for two days, climbing crags like Cathy’s Creek.
We featured the mountain bike day trip to the new Gateway Trails yesterday, but earlier in the week some mountain bikers went to Tsali and Fire Mountain as well! Day one, they rode the “right loop” at Tsali Recreation Area, camped out by Lake Fontana, and then headed to Fire Mountain the next day. Fire Mountain is a trail system in Cherokee, North Carolina, known for it’s very fast and flowy trails. Photos below also include ones from Dupont and Gateway Trails trips!
We’re looking forward to a fun weekend all together at camp again, but after that - there’s one more week of trips that await us!
