What were the highlights from our first Wednesday of June Camp?
The theme for this week has been Bravery. Paul, a first-year counselor, shared a story about his grandfather and the bravery he showed in fighting for our country. He encouraged the boys to try something new outside of their comfort zone.
Dinner was homemade shepherd’s pie with cauliflower and freshly baked bread that we sliced at the table, a fully stocked salad bar, and cake for dessert.
The four different Cabin Line groups each met at their own Campfire areas to spend time together. This allowed each group to focus their conversations on the specific age and stage they’re at, meeting the boys where they are in their unique journeys.
Though each Line at camp has a range of ages, everyone in the Line is in a similar stage of life. Peer interaction in mixed-age groups like this is important, since it serves as the foundation for many aspects of emotional development, including self-esteem, communication skills, and identity. This allows the boys in a narrow range of ages to find common ground, where the slightly younger boys can build confidence and the slightly older boys can gain mentoring skills.
During this time, counselors are also able to share thoughts or advice on what they wished they had known at that age. In addition to discussions, some Lines also enjoyed funny skits. The Line Heads from each group said that there was rich conversation from both campers and staff, and the groups felt more bonded after their campfires.
One of the best parts about camp is the freedom of choice. Every day, there are opportunities to leave your regular activity periods behind and join in on a trip!
These photos are from the many day trips that have already gone out this session:
Yesterday we had five different multi-day trips head out on their adventures - We’re already looking forward to hearing about them when they return!
