Every weekday at camp, boys have the opportunity to leave their regular activities behind, and join a trip off-property. These could be day trips or multi-day trips, and range from beginner to advanced levels. This week the backpackers, mountain bikers, paddlers, and rock climbers went to some beautiful places in Western North Carolina and the surrounding area - and brought back some amazing photos of their adventures!
Dupont Day Hikes - Dupont State Forest is full of waterfalls, and what better way to enjoy them than on a waterfall hike!
3 Day “Mountain Meadow Meander” - this group spent three days backpacking along part of the Art Loeb trail. They got to practice their camping and navigation skills, admire some views, and enjoy some s’mores!
3 Day Panthertown - this group explored the Panthertown Valley in western North Carolina, and got to enjoy Schoolhouse Falls!
Camp Ride - Why leave camp when we have 900+ acres and over 14 miles of great biking trails right here? The mountain bikers had camp rides almost every day, with beginners joining to get the basics down, as well as more experienced riders joining to session their favorite trails in camp once again.
Dupont Riding- Dupont State Forest is one of the most popular spots in the area to ride, and with good reason! The fast, flowy, and well maintained trails are perfect for all levels of riding.
North Mills River Day Trip - This is a great trail network in Pisgah National Forest, with plenty of roots, rocks, river crossings, and fun Pisgah “gnar”!
Lower Green: After working on some “preps” and stroke lessons at the lower lake, there was plenty of time to get on the river! The Lower Green River is the perfect place to try whitewater for the first time, and to master the basics.
3-Day Lake Tugaloo: there’s nothing like a lake trip by canoe to provide the perfect relaxing outdoor outing. For a slower pace than the whitewater trips, this crew enjoyed three days on scenic Lake Tugaloo.
Tuck/Nanty 2-day: The Tuckasegee and Nantahala rivers are just the right challenge for paddlers looking to improve their whitewater skills. This group spent two days enjoying these popular local rivers!
Gilbert’s Rock Day Trips: this is the bread and butter of our climbing program! Gilbert’s Rock is a great natural rock face located a short drive from camp, perfect for mastering the basics of rock climbing before moving on to steeper or more technical climbs. There was a Gilbert’s trip offered almost every this past week (and sometimes two in one day!)
Pisgah 2-day: we’re lucky to be within an easy drive of Pisgah National Forest, and this group got to spend two days in the forest on some beautiful climbs. The boys also got to practice their belaying skills while on the trip.
