Main Camp Cabin Overnights

Take A Hike!

Every day, vans full of excited boys head off the mountain to some beautiful local trails, rocks, lakes, and rivers in this area of North Carolina. However, with over 900 private wooded acres here at camp, there are many corners of this mountaintop that even veteran campers have yet to explore!

During Cabin Overnights, boys are able to explore more of this place they call home during the summer, and get to know their cabin-mates better.

Heading out to their shelter as a cabin group on Monday night.

Each session, cabin groups go on these overnight camping trips together. They hike to a shelter on camp property, cook dinner outdoors, and hang out around the campfire. There are miles of trails and dozens of shelter outposts scattered around camp’s ridges and valleys. On Cabin Overnights, boys are able to see a little more of Falling Creek than they would otherwise see in their daily activities.

Throughout the hundreds of acres, there are shelters located in a variety of different settings. Some are reached in a short 15 minute stroll, while older boys may go on a longer 45 minute hike to reach others. Some are up high on the mountain like “Chief’s Lookout,” which has a great view down into the Green River Valley, and faces the mountains for perfect sunset watching. Some are nestled into the valley like “Chainsaw Gulley,” with plenty of rhododendron thickets to explore and build forts in. Some are next to creeks, or even at the base of Falling Creek Falls like “Copper Cave” and “Otter’s Den,” where you can fall asleep to the sound of the water.

Checking the map before beginning the hike.

On Monday night, half of our Main Campers headed out on their Cabin Overnights, and Saturday night the other half will do the same. We plan the overnights at the beginning of the session and on Saturday night, so that they don’t conflict with any multi-day trips boys may want to join, and cabins can enjoy the evening as a full group.

Gathering firewood and feeding the campfire

The overnight trip is always a great opportunity for a cabin to grow closer, but it is also a fun introduction to camping for boys who may not be as comfortable with the idea of cooking and sleeping outdoors yet. Memories made on the trail while camping are some of the best, and though campers can choose whether or not they leave camp on an adventure trip during the week, we want every boy to be able to experience those bonds that happen on trips with friends.

It’s sure to be a wonderful Wednesday today! Here are some other highlights from our Tuesday:
