Highlights from Sunday

We already reached the final Sunday of June Camp, and time is flying by. Sunday is the time of the week where we are all together at camp to rest, reset, and get ready for the week ahead.

The theme for the last week of the session was introduced: Curiosity.

Our hope is that camp can fan the flame of curiosity in both boys and staff, encouraging the pursuit of curiosity in their lives outside of camp too.

Though curiosity is not specifically mentioned in our Falling Creek Code, we are acting with Warrior Spirit when our curiosity leads us to try new things, and we are acting with Positive Attitude when curiosity gives us a fresh enthusiasm for life. At camp, we can exercise curiosity in the world around us, as well as in the people around us.

On Sundays, after time to sleep in, clean our cabins, and attend church service together, we get to enjoy Sunday Sundaes following lunch!

Also during lunch were signups for trip and events happening this week. Boys were able to sign up for…

  • Paddling trips (to the Upper or Lower Green River, Tuckasegee/Nantahala, and a Mystery 2-day)
  • Fly fishing
  • Mountain Biking (three different day trips to Dupont)
  • Blacksmithing
  • Sailing
  • Rock Climbing (to Linville Gorge for 3 days, or day trips to Looking Glass, or Gilbert’s Rock)
  • Backpacking (to Shining Rock or a 3-day to the NC/GA/TN borders)

In the afternoon on Sundays, boys have two blocks of free-choice time where they can participate in a variety of activities offered. Some are camp favorites, and some special interests of counselors who want to share their hobbies or sports with the boys! Below is a picture of all that was offereed during the first and second blocks on Sunday afternoon.

During Cookout Supper on the field by the gym, we made cabin signs. These hang on the outside of cabins to commemorate the session each summer, and alumni often enjoy finding their old cabin signs when the return to visit camp.

Finally, to finish a super Sunday, we gathered at the Campfire area for skits and songs. One highlight was a new skit that three paddling counselors and three campers shared.

The skit used the theme of “curiosity” for the week, and was about the campers finding a mysterious door that appeared in their cabin. The door invited them to try something new at camp, and opened to show them some fun happening on a trip off-property. The boys were uncertain, and worried about how it would go, or if they wouldn’t like it.

The campers decided to turn away, and the door closed slightly, reassuring them, “as long as your curious about trying something new, my door will open for you to run through!” The skit ended with one of the boys changing his mind, and running back through the door into new adventures.

Plenty of new doors will be opening during this final week of the session!
