On Saturday, we got to spend the day with our friends at another local boys camp in Black Mountain, NC: Camp Rockmont. It was a day full of fun tournaments and friendly competition!

What happens when you combine Falling Creek + Rockmont? You get Falling Rocks… or an Avalanche! This is where the name for this North Carolina Boys Camp Tournament Day came from, and we hope it’s one that continues for years to come. Asst. Program & Staff Director, Zach Rivera, said “If I were to give the name/event a slogan, it would probably be ‘It’s going down!’”

Before the tournaments began, we had a typical Saturday at camp. We slept in an extra hour and then enjoyed some free choice activities in the morning. Below is an image of all that was offered before lunch.

The Avalanche trophy!

After Rest Hour, we gathered in the gym to meet up with Rockmont, and to present the trophy that everyone would be competing for!

We made the top, and Rockmont made the base - both were welded together at blacksmithing to create the new trophy. The top is an eagle head as a nod to their logo, with the FCC log and flame within it.

After the welcoming ceremonies, we split into three groups based on ages, and each headed to a different zone in camp.

The three zones were at…

  • 1.the Gym & Turf Field,
  • 2.the Landsports Field & Docks, and
  • 3.the Dining Hall & Tennis Courts.

Each zone had several different events, competitions, & games that campers can compete in individually to earn points for their camp’s overall total score.

The individual competitions included -

  • Zone 1) Basketball Knockout, 3v3 Basketball Games, Flag Football Combine, Spikeball Doubles, Dodgeball (7v7), Cornhole Doubles
  • Zone 2) Single Throw Disc Golf, Canoe Race, Swimming Competition, Relay Races, Riflery Competition, Volleyball, Tug o’ War, Steal the Bacon/Shoe Bowling
  • Zone 3) Foosball Doubles, Table Tennis, Warrior Ball, Four Square, Pickleball, Speed Chess, Tennis/Court Games

At 5pm, the bell rang to mark the transition to team competitions. Everyone regrouped at the gym and could decide to join either basketball on Gym Court, soccer in Indoor Field (Downstairs), or ultimate frisbee on the Turf Field just outside the Gym. If boys didn’t want to participate, they could cheer on their friends instead. In these team games, Rockmont beat us 23 to 19 in basketball, and 16 to 14 in soccer, but we won 11 to 5 in ultimate frisbee!

Finally, just before dinner the counselors got in on the action! There was a Rockmont vs. Falling Creek staff basketball game and staff soccer game.

Both were very close, but Falling Creek came out on top in both events! However, these staff games were just for fun and didn’t count towards the overall points tally.

Dinner was a picnic on the field at the gym, where we enjoyed burgers with all the toppings, pasta salad, fresh watermelon, baked beans, and brownies. Everyone had worked up an appetite from all the games, which made dinner taste even better!

To finish the day, we gathered to hear the much-anticipated final points results. In the end, all the camper points from the individual and team events all day came out to 1,200 points for Rockmont, and 1,540 points for Falling Creek!

It was very close in the end, and clear that Rockmont has some talented campers. It was fun and exciting to get to participate in some friendly competition with them, and we’re grateful the spent the day with us! We’re proud of our Falling Creek guys and are already looking forward to another rematch next summer.
