Hard to believe that yesterday was the first day of activities for our 3rd week of Main Camp already. This week’s theme is “friendship”, and our hope at camp is that friendship is one of the products of every person’s experience here.
Friendship means relationships formed and trust built, shaped by shared experiences, shared laughs and tears, and shared hearts. “Making friendship a fine art” is one of the tenets of Servant’s Heart in the Falling Creek Code. Below are some quotes about friendship that we included in this year’s edition of the Counselor Journal.
“The ultimate touchstone of friendship is not improvement, neither of the other nor of the self, the ultimate touchstone is witness, the privilege of having been seen by someone and the equal privilege of being granted the sight of the essence of another, to have walked with them and to have believed in them, and sometimes just to have accompanied them for however brief a span, on a journey impossible to accomplish alone.” - David Whyte
“No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15
“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
In blacksmithing, part of the progression to reach Warrior (the highest level) is successfully forge welding. This technique is when you heat two pieces of metal up enough that they melt and fuse into one piece when hammered together. It’s an essential skill for any blacksmith to master, and is one of the oldest techniques of joining two metal pieces. Patton V was working on this skill this past week in the shop, and had been putting in some hard work to reach Warrior!
Just a short drive from camp is the Tryon International Equestrian Center, home of the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2018. This past week, a group of campers were able to take an evening trip to the center to watch a horse show in person. It was a great experience to see such beautiful and talented horses along with their riders, completing a course with elegance and strength.
