We start the day off with a great story from one of our staff members. Yesterday’s Morning Watch story was from a first time camp counselor, Kara E. who is joining us all the way from Australia, about 10,000 miles away from North Carolina!
Kara introduced a concept called the Ripple Effect, which essentially highlights how important our actions can be. How saying or doing one small thing can cause a ripple and affect many other things in life.
She explained how having a small conversation with a friend, led her to actually applying to Falling Creek. Although it sounded scary, flying across to the other side of the world to work at a summer camp. She made that decision which led her to where she is today. Exploring new places and having new experiences was possibly because she took that leap of faith and made that decision to apply to Falling Creek.
Following breakfast, we have our daily Morning Assembly where we make important announcements about the day.
The Morning Assembly includes songs, skits as well as a weather report from our very own news reporter, Jackson Schlierf announces what the weather would be like, reminding us to wear sunscreen or warning us about rain, however he does it in a funny TV anchor type cast. Asher Sloan and Rex Bowen come out when the boys chant the ESPN news sound and then they announce which teams have won in the sporting world, including some key camp activities such as Green and Gold competitions.
Yesterday, we had a hilarious skit performed by Beans and Whit, counselors who were former campers. They did a skit that is a Falling Creek tradition, involving Cool Whip whipped cream. ”Hey Beans, do you like Cool and Creamy in your shoes?” “Hey Whit, do you like Cool and Creamy in your hair?” “Cool and Creamy, we like cool and creamy. Cool and Creamy, we like it the best!” By the end of the skit, the counselors are both covered in whipped cream!
We then had some important announcements from our activity leads, reminding campers where to meet to head out for the trips or special activities they chose to sign up for.
It is time to break out for our daily activities, or to leave for our usual day or multi-day trips around the mountains of Western North Carolina and beyond. Some exciting trips to note would be the fly fishing expedition, trail rides with the horses, as well as sailing, rock climbing, and paddling adventures, to name a few.
The boys have the opportunity to enjoy the 6 activities that they have chosen, as well as go off on a trip if they have signed up. This is where the campers get to build up their skills and work on their progressions.
Yesterday’s evening program was the second set of cabin competitions, while the second group of campers went off to their overnight. Campers got to play games such as warrior ball, tug of war, corn hole, and many more.
Following Evening Program, the boys enjoyed their usual milk and cookies and headed to their cabins to shower, brush teeth and enjoy Evening Embers together. After a long day of excitement, they are able to reflect and discuss how they feel about the week they’ve just had.
