The boys completed their first progressions as a Scout, and made great progress. They learned the basic knowledge behind Leave No Trace, as well as how to dig a cat hole. The boys got the opportunity to learn how to set up and maintain a campsite.
Stanton S. from Cabin 28 went on the 3 day backpacking journey as he said “it was really fun because we got to hike, we saw some cool views and lots of animals. It was even fun at the campsite. I would definitely do it again if I have the chance.”
Stanton explained how on the way back, they stopped at a waterfall and got to enjoy the scenery for a bit. He also mentioned that they were lucky enough to see water snakes as well as a rattlesnake on their trip, which was “pretty cool.”
They learned how to make fires, as well as followed the Leave No Trace guidelines. His favorite part was learning how to filter water properly. That way they could safely enjoy the water from the nearby creek throughout their journey.
This was a 2 night, 3 day trip to Table Rock Mountain with a great group of campers who were eager to explore the gorge.
Day 1: The group set up their camp and were ready to climb the set of rocks called The Chimneys. They climbed Yellow Wall first which was a fairly decent climb for everyone.
Day 2: This was a fun day. The group repelled down a rock called Devil’s Cellar, which is about an 80 foot drop. This was a free hanging climb which the boys thoroughly enjoyed. Even more excitement rose when they saw 4 fighter jets flying underneath them. The depth of this beautiful gorge allows the jets to fly below their elevation where they are climbing.
After their long day of fun, they decided to take a nap and recuperate. The group then enjoyed some night climbing, back on The Chimneys. This time they climbed the Blue Wall, the boys were stoked as this was a steep overhang, which is quite a challenging climb.
Day 3: The final day was a much more relaxed pace, after a couple of adventurous and fast paced days. . The group decided to do a hike up to the summit of Table Rock to look at the beautiful view. They then ventured back to camp.
The boys absolutely loved it!
Lincoln S. from Cabin 6, is only 9 years old and the youngest venturer on this climbing trip. He said his favorite part was definitely the climbing aspect. He enjoyed the night climb the most, even though it was extremely challenging and he got a few cuts and blisters. We agreed that this shows his inner strength and resilience.
Lincoln found the entire trip to be extremely fun. He enjoyed the breakfast they had on the last day which included banana bread, and spoke fondly about the cream cheese and pepperoni bagels that they enjoyed. He said after the 3 days, he was really exhausted, therefore he slept for an hour on the way back.
We’re looking forward to some final trips this week as we wrap up the June Camp session already.
