We’ve spoken about our more traditional sports program, now let’s discuss the more out of the box sports that we have to offer here, at Falling Creek.

We offer a variety of sports, some less traditional than others which makes it even more fun!

Archery is a summer camp staple.

Archery

Of course you have always wanted to shoot a bow and arrow, as they did in the olden days. At Falling Creek, we offer archery which is extremely fun for the campers. What exactly happens at our archery sessions? First of all, if you have no experience, no problem!

We start our beginners off by walking them through the safety preps that we follow at camp, this includes learning whistle commands. We then offer instructions on how to shoot a bow and arrow, helping with aim and accuracy. The boys know not to dry shoot as this can break the equipment. They also know not to run onto the range while arrows are still being shot.

Once all the nitty gritties are handled, we jump into the fun of learning archery! We start by telling the boys the plan for the day. Whether it be working on their progressions, or playing a mini game, we have a set out structure for each session.

We practice shooting, as well as work on aim. If we are not working on progressions, we often play an archery game. These games include Mini Olympics, which basically involves shooting the arrow, having eliminations , and moving the target back until one camper becomes the successor. Another fun game includes the Color Game, where a certain color on the target is picked and you have to hit that color to gain points. Every session is a chance to learn and improve on your archery skills.

We have an 18 hole disc golf course here at camp to play on any day of the week!

Disc Golf

Disc Golf is a cross between golf and frisbee, where you start at a specific point and throw the frisbee into the basket. The lower your score, the better. All of our courses are Par 3, which makes them great for beginners.

A typical Disc Golf session involves the counselors teaching basic skills to the campers. This includes how to shoot, throw and putt in a disc. We usually practice these skills altogether as a group, ensuring each camper can grasp the play.

We then break out into smaller groups, typically based on skill level. Beginners usually get one on one guidance with the counselors to ensure they can learn and have fun. At Disc Golf, we focus on having fun, even if you are a newbie, you can enjoy it! What’s better than walking through the woods and throwing discs?

The boys learn how to use pellet guns safely at camp during the riflery program.

Riflery

Firstly, we need to run through all the safety precautions. We tell everyone present the rules that we must follow in order to ensure we all have fun. No running out onto the range, no pointing the guns in any direction other than downrange. As well as only fetch the target when it is a “cold” range. We learn all the terminology, and ensure a safe environment.

Once you are prepped with the rules, we run through how the rifle works. Riflery is more than just shooting at a target, we practice aiming in different positions. These include prone, standing and kneeling. We practice these positions throughout the week, and on Fridays, we get to have a competition. The most accurate shooter wins.

At Riflery, we shoot airguns with small pellets aimed at targets that are placed about 10 yards away.

Ultimate frisbee is a popular sport at camp among the boys!

Ultimate Frisbee

It is time for some Ultimate Frisbee! We start our sessions off with a quick warm up, this involves running a lap around the field (and no cutting corners! Eleanor is watching!) We counselors motivate the campers while doing so. We then ensure the campers have a water break, as keeping hydrated in this heat is very important.

We then run drills and learn new techniques, such as forehand throws, backhands and certain specific plays. We teach newbies the rules and make it as interactive as possible.

Towards the end of the session, we will practice what we’ve learned. This often involves playing a game. We mix it up, and even the counselors join in! We often play a counselors versus campers game, which is always a blast!

Always Fun

Your boys have the opportunity to learn all these new skills and techniques. There is something for everyone at camp!
