Here’s how the boys celebrated the Olympics, summer camp style!
We started off by having a fulfilling breakfast, which was inspired by France. Giving us a buffet of chocolate croissants, bacon, fresh strawberries and boiled eggs, as well as the usual fruit bar stocked with yogurt, granola and a variety of fruits.
The teams then met up on the land sports field to paint their faces with their countries colors, come up with a chant, and get energized for the event. This was in preparation for our opening ceremony, where each country was given the opportunity to share their chant and show their team spirit.
We then prepared for the first events of the day!
First, we had individual events which consisted of archery, speed climbing, canoe racing, riflery, pickleball, basketball, football, a belly flop contest, soccer, lap swim race contest, disc golf, tennis, finger painting contest, as well as a push-ups contest.
Each individual camper was given the opportunity to participate in the above events and was awarded points for their country based on how well they did.
We took a break from the Olympics to recharge our energy levels and have a lovely Greek inspired lunch. This consisted of Greek chicken with tzatziki sauce and roasted sweet potatoes, pita bread, and a marinated cucumber, tomato & feta salad. The usual salad bar options were available with beans and rice, much needed for that extra energy. For desserts we had a wonderful Greek yogurt cheesecake.
Now that we have refueled our energy levels it is time for the ultimate relay. This consisted of each country having every single member camper and counselor participate in a relay event.
They started off similarly to the dizzy bat game, by placing their heads on a bat and spinning around five times, in order to get dizzy. The team then had to run to the egg balancing station where they ran with an egg on a spoon. Following that they have to knock down a plank using a ball and finally to the person at the end where they will give their counselors a high five and run all the way back to tag the next teammate.
Of course all of that was extremely tiring which is why we then proceeded to have our Olympic feast. This was a classic English dinner of fish and chips (fries), tartar sauce & malt vinegar, served with a green pea salad and bread rolls. The usual salad bar was stocked with salad options as well as beans and rice. For dessert we all enjoyed a lovely raspberry tart for dessert.
It is time for the closing ceremony. This was extremely fun because now it was the chance for counselors to do their part in ensuring their country gets as many points as possible. Campers cheered on their countries and showed incredible team spirit. The counselors participated in a fashion show, dressed up as their countries flags, a cherry pie eating contest as well as a dance competition, where they had to show off their dance moves.
After everyone’s valiant efforts, it was time to announce the winners. The bronze medalist was Macedonia and the silver medal was earned by Canada. And finally with an amazing comeback, we had the winning team Lesotho take the gold medal.
The boys had so much fun showing their team spirit and getting points for their country. They put in a lot of effort to make their country and teammates proud.
