We have spoken about how Sundays are used to relax and rewind from the week. A day dedicated to reflection and pondering the next week’s goals and commitments.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what a typical Sunday looks like at Falling Creek.

Firstly, we have a delicious breakfast accompanied by Krispy Kreme, a tradition that remains a favorite with both the boys and the staff. This Sunday, we enjoyed overnight oats made with seeds and raisins paired with a blueberry compote and golden butter served with bacon. The usual breakfast bar option was available with a variety of fruits, granola, boiled eggs, oatmeal and dried fruit.

Cabin Inspections

The cabin inspection that matters the most!

Our cabins get inspected everyday, but on Sundays we have the ultimate cabin inspections. This is a more thorough inspection conducted by one of the directors that determines the order in which we get released from the dining hall for ice-cream sundaes.

Each cabin gets time to clean up, this includes not just sweeping, ensuring the shower and toilets are clean, tidying up each area and making the bunk beds, but it also includes an open trunk inspection.

Cabin inspections teach the boys the importance of personal responsibility, teamwork, and maintaining a clean and organized living space.

Falling Creek is a Christian camp, but we are non-denominational and our church service is centered around common values that are important for everyone, no matter your specific faith background.

Church Session

Praise the Lord.

Church on Sundays brings us all together to reflect on the week that we just had. Boys who are used to regularly going to Catholic Mass at home leave early in the morning to attend their service in town at the local Catholic church. They do return in time to help with cabin inspection and also attend our FCC church service as well.

We offer the boys a safe, sacred space that allows them to share their accomplishments and goals for the week. We reflect on the past week’s theme, which was Mindfulness, as well as introduce the new theme for the week, Love.

Along with singing songs, watching a hilarious skit and being together to connect with ourselves and God, we come together to create a beautiful space for love.

Ice-Cream Sundaes

After lunch, we enjoy delicious ice-cream sundaes. Lunch is our usual traditional southern-style fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and home baked rolls. The salad bar is available with alternative options such as beans and rice, veggies, hummus and boiled eggs.

Now it is time to be let out for the ice-cream sundaes. The ice-cream sundaes include a choice of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, along with dairy-free alternative options. We then top up these yummy flavors with whipped cream, chocolate or caramel sauce, crushed cookies, sprinkles and a cherry.

Ice-cream sundaes are definitely a camp favorite.

Traditional Cookout

On Sunday, we enjoy our traditional weekly cookout, we meet up on the Turf field after handwashing to give grace and get ready to eat.

We enjoy delicious burger options which include a beef burger party (vegetarian options available) topped with a choice of lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles and condiments. They even have the option to add a spicy bacon jam and pimento cheese. Sides include fried green tomato, potato salad, and watermelon. For dessert, we have a scrumptious, crowd favorite red velvet cookie with dark and white chocolate chips.

Campfire

More tradition to follow, we have our weekly campfire. Another opportunity to sit together in unity and get ready for the week ahead.

This is where we introduce the new members of the Honor Council, voted in for consideration by the boys and staff via individual ballot after lunch. We got introduced to the two new Journeymen of the session (Those who have achieved Warrior rank in 3 activities), Jack S from Bellaire, TX, and Berkley W, from Greensboro, NC. They will be joined by Thad J from Charlotte, NC to embark on their journeys to become Keepers of the Flame at some point this week.

Zach Rivera, the Director Advisor for the boys who are part of the FLINT program (rising 11th graders), gave several of these gentlemen an opportunity to share with the community about their Falling Creek experience.

We emphasize our theme of the week with poems, songs, skits and stories. Ensuring the message of Love echoes through the camp.

Sunday traditions are important, meaningful to the community, and ensure we are prepared for the upcoming week.
