Let’s go!
We had our much anticipated, 2nd annual, Rockmont versus Falling Creek Camp friendly, camp Avalanche Competition.
The name Avalanche comes from a mix of our camp names - what you get when you combine “falling” and “rocks” from Falling Creek and Rockmont.
We arrived at Rockmont Camp just after 3pm, all painted up in colors gold, blue and red. FCC was ready for anything, bringing with them great courage and determination.
We met with Rockmont in their gym and listened as they introduced the format for the day. We all discussed good sportsmanship as well as friendly fairplay.
After a bit of chanting and warcries, we introduced everyone to the trophy for the year and showed it off. The trophy had been previously made by a combined effort of our talented black smithers at both Falling Creek and Rockmont.
It is now time for the games to begin!
Let’s see who takes the trophy.
We started off the friendly competitions with various zone activities. Having Rockmont split up into 3 different zones displaying different competitions.
These competitions included a few normal camp activities as well as a few more unusual camp games. The activities included, but were not limited to, Dodgeball. Spikeball, Ping Pong, Cornhole, Paddling, Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, Climbing Wall along with the unusual Egg Toss and Web Competition.
As untraditional as the egg tossing was, the boys definitely had a blast tossing some eggs. In fact, one competition went as far as throwing an egg to your partner over a 100 ft distance. Egg tossing involves standing a few feet apart from your partner, then once you throw the egg and your partner successfully catches it, you take a step back. Although we did not win that competition, the boys had loads of fun and declared “We’ll get ‘em next time,”
Another unusual competition I would like to highlight that the boys showed great resilience in, would include The Web. This was a super challenging activity that definitely tested mental and physical strength. The web is a rope course that extends over the lake that is shaped like a spider web and has multiple sides going around in a circle. Each side has a different type of rope challenge and the aim is to climb around the entire web without falling into the water.
Our very own Keeper of the Flame showed how resilient he is, while attempting this new activity. The winning time from Rockmont was 1 minute 51 seconds. William attempted the web for the very first time and scored an impressive time of 1 minute 59 seconds. He then, determined to do better, attempted again despite having sore feet and improved with a time of 1 minute 57 seconds. Although he didn’t have the best time, he showed great determination. “I didn’t know what to do, but then I pushed through the course and showed resilience.”
It is time for the tournaments! We had three tournaments that tested our skills. Everyone played well and pushed hard, knowing we were nearing the end of the Avalanche competition. Every single boy on that field battled hard, pushing for their camp to win.
The outcomes and scores:
Ultimate Frisbee : 6-30 Rockmont to Falling Creek
Soccer 2-1 Falling Creek to Rockmont
Basketball 43-23 Rockmont to Falling Creek
Although we reigned victorious in two of the competitions, is that enough to take home the trophy? Who would win the 2nd annual Rockmont vs. Falling Creek Avalanche Competition?
As the day came to a close. Immense pride filled the air as everyone showed courage, strength, resilience and determination.
We had our closing statements for the day as everyone waited in anticipation to hear them announce the winners.
Finally, it was time, drum roll please.
The 2024 Avalanche Competition winners are… Falling Creek Camp! Back to Back.
We want to send Rockmont a huge thank you for hosting us for this beautiful day of fun and friendly competition.
