The boys start every day at camp outdoors at Morning Watch with a "thought for the day."

Morning Watch

We had William Ashcroft, a camp counselor and former camper, share his meaning of the word Respect.

“I speak to you all, not in my best condition,” he starts off by showing us what space he is in mentally and physically. “I have a headache, I am a bit tired and a little bit more achy than I was at the start of the summer. And that is okay, because I am doing what I love.”

He goes on to remind us that our bodies are a temple and we must respect and listen to it. Prioritizing rest and understanding when you may need to take a break is extremely important.

Ashcroft tells us a story about a boy from the last session that loved mountain biking. He went mountain biking every single day and was amazing at it! Until one day, when the boy returned from a mountain biking trip and was exhausted, he asked to skip the Evening Program that day in order to rest. Ashcroft reminded the boy that although camp provides an opportunity to have fun everyday and pick your own schedule, it is important to take time to rest. Listen to what your body is telling you and rejuvenate.

Take those rest days, take a moment to rest and allow yourself time to relax. Respect your body.

Insight Into Activities: Non-Traditional Sports

Archery: We start our beginners off by walking them through the safety preps that we follow at camp, this includes learning whistle commands. We then offer instructions on how to shoot a bow and arrow, helping with aim and accuracy. We practice shooting, as well as work on aim. If we are not working on progressions, we often play an archery game.

Riflery: Firstly, we need to run through all the safety precautions. We go through the rules that we must follow in order to ensure we all have fun. We learn all the terminology, and ensure a safe environment. We practice aiming in different positions, these include prone, standing and kneeling. At Riflery, we shoot airguns with small pellets aimed at targets that are placed about 10 yards away.

Disc Golf: Disc Golf is a cross between golf and frisbee, where you start at a specific point and throw the frisbee into the basket. The lower your score, the better. All of our courses are Par 3, which makes them great for beginners. At Disc Golf, we focus on having fun, even if you are a newbie, you can enjoy it!

Ultimate Frisbee: We start our sessions off with a quick warm up, this involves running a lap around the field. We then run drills and learn new techniques, such as forehand throws, backhands and certain specific plays. We teach newbies the rules and make it as interactive as possible.
