Miguel Cañas

  • My name is Miguel Cañas
  • I’m known as Miguel
  • I’m from Colombia
  • This is my first year on staff at Falling Creek
  • I’m teaching woodworking and nature
  • I’m currently in the final stage of my studies at Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia, where I’m pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages. I expect to graduate in December 2025. After graduation, I plan to continue my academic journey by pursuing a master’s degree in either Applied Linguistics or Language Teaching. Participating in a summer camp program will not only enrich my practical experience working with children and language learning, but also support my long-term goals in the field of education.
  • If I could be friends with any character from a book or movie, I think I’d be friends with Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon. He’s creative, kind, and brave in a quiet, thoughtful way. I admire how he stays true to himself even when others doubt him, and how he builds strong bonds, not just with people, but with nature and animals too. I feel like we’d have a lot to talk about, and we’d probably go hiking, make weird inventions, and try to train something together (hopefully not a dragon… but who knows?).
  • When I was a kid, I dreamt of being an actor or a singer. I was always the one volunteering for school plays or belting out songs at family gatherings. Performing made me feel alive and confident. Now, I’m on a different path training to be a language teacher, but that creative spark is still very much a part of who I am. I still sing, do karaoke, and bring a little performance into my lessons whenever I can. So in a way, I never really let go of that dream, I just gave it a new direction.
  • A food I would be happy eating every day is Lechona! It’s a traditional Colombian dish made with pork and rice, and honestly, I could eat it every day without getting tired of it. It’s the kind of food that makes you feel right at home. For me, it’s not just about the taste, which is amazing, but also about the memories: family celebrations, special moments, and that feeling of comfort it brings every time.
  • If I could visit any fictional place, it would definitely be Anor Londo from Dark Souls. The place has a mysterious and grand feeling, with huge buildings and statues that make it seem ancient and magical. There’s something about the mix of old architecture and quiet atmosphere that draws me in. I imagine wandering through its paths, getting lost in its beauty, and discovering something new around every corner. It would be the kind of place where even getting lost would feel exciting!
  • What would a successful summer look like for me? For me it would be a mix of fun, connection, and growth. I’d love to bond with the campers and staff, learning from each other and bringing good energy to every activity. I’m passionate about helping others step outside their comfort zones, just like I do with my students. If I’ve helped someone try something new, made people laugh, and learned something myself, I’ll know the summer was a success. Most importantly, I’d love to end it with stories that make me smile, knowing I truly connected with everyone.
