What’s A Typical Day At Camp Like?

New Camper Series

This blog is part of our “First-Time Friday” series for new campers. We’re sharing tips and answers to questions that new families might have, especially if this will be your first summer at camp!

At Falling Creek, you get to choose how you want to fill your day, and what trips you want to go on.

An Adventure Every Day!

Every weekday, during the June, Main, and 2-Week Camp session, Monday through Friday has the same general outline… but with fun activities, exciting trips, and special signup activities, each day is very different! At Falling Creek, you get to choose how you want to fill your day, and what trips you want to go on.

You’ll have a balance of structure with six instructional activities and two free choice periods daily during the weekdays. At any time in our June, Main, and 2-Week Camp sessions, you can sign up for trips out of camp, ranging from short afternoon trips or overnights, to 3, 4, or even 5 day outdoor adventures in the back-country. If you decide to go on a trip, you’ll simply leave your scheduled activities behind, and plug back into your schedule when you return.

Our Junior Camp Program runs differently and is more structured for beginner campers. You will have the opportunity to sample about 16-18 traditional camp activities together with your cabin during our 6-day Junior Camp session.

So what can you expect during a typical day at Falling Creek?

We start with a "thought for the day" at the peaceful Morning Watch area.

Morning Watch

We start each day at the peaceful Morning Watch area. After the wakeup bell and cabin clean up, you and your cabin will silently gather together on a bench overlooking the lake. After a few minutes of quiet, hearing only the sounds of nature, a staff member delivers the message for the day. The topic of Morning Watch is up to person speaking that day, but is typically a personal story, a reflection on a Christian Bible verse, or a quote related to one of the four pillars of the Falling Creek Code

Breakfast

Then it’s off to the Dining Hall for a hearty breakfast! For more about meals at camp, you can check out this earlier blog in our “New Camper Series”.

Morning Assembly

After breakfast, get ready for a fun and exciting Morning Assembly! The entire camp community assembles together on the front porch of the Dining Hall overlooking the upper lake. Whether it’s one of our crazy staff skits or joining in an all-camp sing along, nothing beats this upbeat way to start a great camp day. Watch this video to see what a typical Morning Assembly at camp is like.

Morning Activities (or Trips)

After we dismiss from the front porch, you’ll head straight to your first activity period of the day. There are three activity periods in the morning, and three more in the afternoon. When you first get to camp for June, Main, and 2-Week Camp sessions, you’ll sign up for six of your favorite activities to do each day. You can always change these later if you wish.

Alternatively, if you’ve signed up for a trip or special activity that morning, just leave your schedule behind and jump right back in when you return! More about signing up for trips here.

free swim blob, anyone?

Free Choice

You’ll have the option to choose what you want to do for an hour of free time before lunch and again before dinner. These “free choice periods” are an opportunity for you to enjoy unstructured activities like free swim, playing in the gym, playing games and catching up with friends under the Dining Hall, fishing on the lake, card games, or reading at the library.

Lunch & Rest Period

You’ll probably have worked up an appetite after a busy morning. Luckily, lunch is next on the schedule! After lunch everyone heads back to their cabins for a quiet rest period. During this time you can nap, read, write letters, or just relax in your bunk. This is also the time that your counselor will bring the daily mail back to the cabin.

Evening Program is a fun game or event, usually played with the other cabins in your Line.

Afternoon Activities & Free Choice

After resting up for a busy afternoon, you’ll have your next three activities of the day. You’ll also get to enjoy a second block of “free choice” time. Will you go down the roller coaster at the lake? Challenge your friends to a game of foosball? Read at the grassy knoll? Play “magic the gathering” at the Grid? The choice is yours!

Dinner & Evening Program

After Free Choice you’ll meet back at the Dining Hall for dinner. Evening Program comes next, which is a fun game or event played with the other cabins in your Line. We might play team relay or Taco Cat on the field, have a camp-wide scavenger hunt, play Multiball on the courts, or Yoshi Ball in the “Thunder Dungeon.” You can read more about Evening Program in this blog.

A typical day ends with Milk and Cookies, and Evening Embers with your cabin mates to talk about the day’s adventures.

Evening Embers

After the excitement of Evening Program and nightly Milk & Cookies, you’ll return to the cabin for “Call to Quarters.” This is when you’ll follow your evening routine for bed, including showers, brushing teeth, etc. Every evening after the lights bell, counselors facilitate “Evening Embers” for 15-20 minutes. You’ll light a candle, sit together with your cabin mates, and talk about how your day was, what you will do tomorrow, and what you may want to do before the session is over. As the session progresses, you will talk about the FCC Code, values, hopes, and goals.

Everyone is tired and happy by the time it’s Lights Out, and the next day we do it all over again!

What About Weekends?

We’re glad you asked…

Weekend Schedule

During the weekends in our June, Main, and 2-Week Camp sessions, we take a break from our regular schedules to enjoy a more relaxed pace at camp.

On Saturdays with everyone back in camp from their trips, we get to enjoy things that don’t usually fit into the normal daily activity time. This includes playing all-camp-games for Green and Gold points, skit practices, and going on one camping overnight per session as a cabin. We also compete in tournaments on Saturdays, and you can either participate or cheer on your friends!

Some of the Saturday all-camp-games we play include:

  • Wild Wild West
  • Deep Woods Capture the Flag
  • Control vs. Chaos
  • Battle Royale
  • Loot the Vault
  • Counselor Hunt
  • Zombie Apocalypse
  • Olympics …and more!

Sundays are like a reset button for the week, with more time to reflect at Church and Campfire. Falling Creek is a Christian camp, but we are non-denominational and our church service is centered around common values that are important for everyone, no matter your specific faith background. We think the Campfire Area is one of the most beautiful settings to enjoy God’s creation as a community of friends.

On Sunday evenings we have a cookout supper. There’s also more time to clean for cabin inspections (and ice-cream sundaes after!) and more time to try new things with Special-Signups.

For details on the unique schedule during Junior Camp, check out our Junior Camp Program page.

What A Day!

Though there’s a general schedule each day, no two days are the same at camp. You’ll have plenty of free choice with opportunities to go on trips or change up your activiites. As you can see, the days are just packed, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
