Main Camp Opening Day!

Opening Day always brings excitement. Parents unload trunks. Counselors learn names. New campers wonder what the next few weeks will hold.

But Main Camp has a different feel.

Nearly half of the 313 campers who arrived today are returning for their fifth summer or beyond. They came from 23 states and three countries, but many weren’t trying to figure out where to go. They were looking for counselors, cabinmates, and friends they hadn’t seen since last summer.

For those campers, Opening Day wasn’t about learning camp. It was about returning to it.

For Assistant Program Director Whit Flickinger, that’s what makes Main Camp unique.

There is so much belief and buy-in during Main Camp,” he said. “We have a strong community of campers that came in today. These campers remember the traditions and pass them down year after year. They are the legacy of Falling Creek culture.

That culture isn’t built in one afternoon. It’s been shaped over 58 summers, with each generation of campers passing it on to the next. On Opening Day, returning campers help new boys become part of it.

That lesson begins almost immediately.

During a Sorrel gathering, Line Head Charlie Friedrich introduced the youngest campers to the line’s motto: Positive Attitude.

We really want to be a family for the next four weeks,” he told them. “So we need to be kind to each other. Take care of each other. If you see something that needs taking care of, go ahead and be the guy that does it.

Long before campers earn progressions or head into the mountains, they’re reminded that the most important part of camp is taking care of one another.

For returning campers, Opening Day quickly became about looking ahead.

Gaines S. from Nashville, Tennessee, is back for his fourth summer and already has his sights set on earning Warrior in Basketball.

I’m excited to meet my cabin and sign up for activities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sanders G. from New Orleans, Louisiana, is spending his fifth summer at Falling Creek. He was excited to return to Free Choice on Opening Day and is already looking forward to fishing later this week.

I love all the Free Choice activities like ping pong and Warrior Ball,” he said.

For many returning campers, camp isn’t about discovering traditions. It’s about returning to the ones they’ve missed all year.

As campers rotated through cabin photos, waterfront introductions, activity sign-ups, and adventure orientations, they also found time for games of Dodgeball and DragonTails in the gym. Little by little, the practical parts of Opening Day gave way to something that felt unmistakably like camp.

First-year camper William R. from Dallas, Texas, needed even less convincing.

We get to run all over the place??!! OH I’M IN!” he shouted as his cabin headed to DragonTails.

By Afternoon Assembly, campers were singing “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” and “Fire on the Mountain.”

The first day ended where many Falling Creek traditions begin: at Campfire.

Campers sang “Count on Me,” “Country Roads,” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” before watching a skit about a camper who wished he could do everything perfectly, only to discover that his mistakes had given him friendships and memories he never would have experienced otherwise.

Program Director and Chaplain Matt Sloan built on that idea as he introduced this week’s theme: Endeavor.

He encouraged campers to start with the end in mind and reminded them that growth doesn’t come from getting everything right. It comes from trying, learning, and choosing to keep going.

For nearly half the campers, today felt like coming home. For some boys, it was the beginning of something entirely new. By the end of the night, they were all gathered around the same campfire.

Around Camp

  • Adventure Sign-Ups: Campers filled mountain biking, paddling, backpacking, and rock climbing trips as they began planning their outdoor adventures for the week.

  • Milestones: This session includes 8 STEEL campers, 14 FLINT campers, 4 Journeymen, and 10 campers who have already earned their second Warrior.

  • Looking Ahead: Today marks the first full day of activities, and by this evening half of camp will head for their first cabin overnights of the session. For many returning campers, overnights are one of the traditions they look forward to all year.

  • What’s Next & How to Follow Along: Daily photos will be uploaded by lunchtime each day via your CampInTouch account or the Campanion App. These galleries give a glimpse into life on the mountain. Not every camper, every day, but enough to follow the rhythm of the session. Blogs will be posted each morning, usually around 9:30 a.m. Expect stories, reflections, and occasional guest posts from staff throughout the summer.
